Giza Plateau

Pyramids

The Giza Plateau is located in the middle of Cairo, Egypt and the site of the famous pyramids and sphinx. There are roads throughout the rather large site but you can also walk or hire a camel to visit.

Camels

Though the three largest pyramids of Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure located on the north end of the plateau are what most think of from Giza there are a number of other pyramids on the site including those for queens. There are also cemeteries, temples and a workers town on the plateau.

Sphinx

The sphinx is located to the south of the pyramid complex near to the eastern site exit. Here there is also seating for the evening light show (held three times every night).

Pyramid Access

Entering Pyramid

Most pyramids can be accessed by narrow tunnels but you may need to stand in a line for quite some time before entering. Be aware that the tunnels may be very tight and are not recommended for people suffering in any way from claustrophobia. Most pyramids have a central chamber that is often undecorated and quite plain.

Practicalities

Car Park

The main car park is to the north of the site where the ticket booth and security screening is also located. You can get here by public transport but taxis are also an option. A single ticket provides access to the entire site. There is very little in the way of signage so a guide is highly recommended.
