Fort Qaitbey
Fort Qaitbey is a 15th century fort located on the Mediterranean in the harbour of Alexandria, Egypt. It is built on the exact site of the famous “Lighthouse of Alexandria” and likely even contains materials scavenged from the original building.
The building itself has no real artefacts, just empty rooms with small windows looking out on the ocean. It is very clean and feels somewhat diminished by this with no real sense of history. There are few, if any, labels to explain what you are looking at though in the courtyard there are several information boards that help understand the site.
There are spectacular views of the surrounding corniche from the upper levels of the fort.
Practicalities
The fort is found at the end of a pier with little parking but with lots of souvenir stalls nearby. There is standard security and ticketing processes in effect for access to the fort.
