New South Wales
Introduction
New South Wales is the gateway to the north and interior of Australia. Contrasting the large metropolis of Sydney are the small, relatively unpopulated Blue Mountains National Park just an hour away.
Blue Mountains National Park
The Blue Mountains National Park is a wonderful park area located within an easy drive of Sydney and, as such, is a choice vacation area for the city. The whole area is criss-crossed with walking and hiking trails which stretch for untold miles. There is only one road in and out of the park with few side roads.
Katoomba is one of the busiest areas and includes two of the areas big attractions: The Three Sisters rock formation and the scenic railway.
Around the Three Sisters there is a walk that leads you to the base of the rocks, down a steep staircase, or you can continue on to the base of the valley and join up with a series of paths leading for many miles.
The paths are not terribly well marked so a trail guide map is a definite must. There is not a lot to see when walking along the path at the base of the valley because of the trees but the walker is occasionally rewarded with spectacular lookouts.
