Review of 'Elnecot'

We were SO looking forward to visiting Elnecot after hearing so much about it's ethos of tasty, interesting, locally sourced food. Imagine our surprise when we showed up for a Sunday lunch and told that they only offered a “Sunday Roast” menu. So much for anything interesting, however, we decided to give it a go anyway. I am not sure why restaurants seem to think they MUST offer a roast on Sundays. This tends to often mean the roasts are not exactly amazing as the restaurant departs from it's normal menu to deliver up standard “pub grub”.

Located in New Islington to the east of the city centre, Elnecot is enclosed by floor to ceiling windows with an industrial chic decor. It was jammed packed making us thankful we had pre-booked.

Dry-Aged Welsh Wagyu Topside

The “Dry-Aged Welsh Wagyu Topside” roast (£18) came with roasted potatoes, cauliflower cheese, stuffing, roast carrots and parsnips, sautéed greens and was crowned with a large Yorkshire pudding with a liberal dose of gravy applied throughout (no we were not given a gravy boat). As far as roasts go it was quite tasty though despite it being “wagyu” beef the beef did not taste particularly special (though, of course there are different grades of wagyu…The “Slow-Cooked Shoulder of Yorkshire Lamb” roast (£17) had the same trimmings of course, but the lamb was a bit dry.

The service was OK but not great and at about £25/head it was reasonably priced…for a good roast dinner. Will have to return and actually try their real menu.
