Review of 'The York Roast Co.'
A short distance south of the Chester Cross (in Chester!) you will find the Chester branch of the “The York Roast Co.” (there are two other locations in York) which specializes in “YorkyPub Wrap” - A typical English roast dinner wrapped in a Yorkshire pudding (wrap). I have wanted to visit for quite some time but never manage to be able to drop in when I am in York. The other day we were in the area so decided to give it a go.
The restaurant is found below ground level just off Bridge Street with a limited amount of seating inside and a few tables on the cobbles outside. Most of the business here is likely takeaway so the dining-in experience is, well, basic. The menu is quite simple to follow with four main options: Sandwich (£7.50-£8), “The Yorky Pub Wrap” (meat, sauce, gravy and roasted vegetables; £7.50-£9), “The YorkPud Roast” (same as the wrap but with roast potatoes; £9.50-£10.75), “The Naked Roast” (a roast dinner with no wrap, just meat, roast potatoes, gravy and vegetables; £8.50 to £9). Prices for each vary based on what meat you have with the choices being: Prok, beef, turkey, ham and veggie. Sauces are: Apple, horseradish, cranberry, English mustard, and mint sauce. There are a bunch of sides as well with many of the ingredients available separately and the drinks menu is fairly basic (hot drinks and softs).
We both ordered the standard “YorkyPud Wrap” with what we heard is a local favourite: Beef (£9). I was going to order the turkey but it looked quite dry in the window…We could not find a seat inside so sat outside at one of their covered tables (which we cleaned off before we sat down). We were told we would be brought our food but it was a good 10 minutes or so before this happened with the staff member talking to everyone else to see whose order it was before coming to us.
The wrap was quite tasty, a bit smaller than I would have expected but it was certainly packed with filling. Nicely everything had a distinct flavour including the wonderful carrots which managed not to be over-cooked. The beef was a bit stringy and tough while the horseradish sauce we requested was only at the one end which meant we had some rather exciting last bites in our wrap. The wrap itself was quite a nice, if slightly more pliable Yorkshire pudding, as you might expect. The gravy was quite good as well and was necessary to have the entire wrap work as a whole.
A bit pricey but the wraps certainly are what you would expect. Quite filling and tasty if not exactly the best roast dinner you will ever have but certainly the most portable!
