Review of 'Brasserie Chez Gerard (NOW CLOSED)'

I have actually always wanted to go to a Chez Gerard restaurant having seen them in London and elsewhere. I am a big fan of steaks and the suggestion that they have “the best steak-frites this side of Paris” was so VERY tempting. I visited on a rather busy Friday without a reservation but they were able to put me outside in “the garden” which was actually very nice as the sun was out and it was quite warm. The inside is very modern yet subdued with wood and chrome throughout. I began with the soup of the day which was a cream of spinach – very mild but very good accompanied with their wonderful fresh buns and French butter. The main was, of course, a steak with “frites”, the “Onglet grillee” which seemed to be the best of what was on offer (though many other dishes looked very appealing as well). It was recommended to have it rare though I would normally order a steak medium-rare (never more than that as I do not like chewing on rubber). It came on a wooden board with the frites in a small bowl. Absolutely fantastic with just enough fat in the meat to make it very moist and tender though I must admit it was a bit stringy. I ordered a side of mushrooms which turned out to be field mushrooms with a fantastic cream sauce but did not turn up until I was half way through my meal – The kitchen having forgotten. The service was fantastic the prices were a bit expensive but not enough to put me off. I think the quality is definitely worth it. I will be back to work my way through the rest of the menu. Reservations recommended.
