Review of 'A Dog Called Demolition'

A Dog Called Demolition by Robert Rankin

a_dog_called_demolition.jpg Something odd is going on in Brentford…though, perhaps, something odd is always going on in Brentford? Sam Sprout discovers that all humans appear to be possessed by alien invaders but has died, seemingly, penniless in unusual circumstances due to the lack of a battery in his hearing aid and an overboiled pot. His “friends” from the village go in search of the money obtained by the many loans that Sam had but discover something more shocking. Danny is not lonely and sad anymore now that he has a dog called “Princey” which he has put together himself from scraps in the garden shed though it is unclear who is controlling who…Will the alien invaders be found out and go on their way quietly?

Another amusing trip to Rankin's Brentford where something odd is always going on for the equally odd, and slightly dim, residents. The English humour oozes from every page as we follow a sequence of amusing events to the improbable conclusion. Each chapter is headed by quotes, song lyrics and even poems to provide a slight distraction from the plot which continues in a myriad, twisted fashion.

An easy and fun read that often amuses in a sort of “chuckle” way throughout though it is quite difficult to completely follow what is going on as the unusual events unfold.
