Europe is an area of contrasts: Culturally, linguistically (Switzerland has HOW many official languages?), environmentally, cuisine…
For complete freedom, the best way to experience Europe is to drive but there are great deals if you want to get a rail or bus pass. Language is typically not a problem (waving one's arms works wonders!) as most people have some understanding of English though it is advisable to at least make an attempt at speaking the local language. Be careful that you know what the local language is - for example, in some parts of Switzerland they speak Italian (not in any tourist book I know).
