Review of 'Shawarma King'
While visiting Glasgow we had some of the best Shawarma wraps we have ever had in our life and we were told the best of the best was “Shawarma King” on, as might be guessed, King Street on the west side of the city centre a stones throw from the river. Shawarma is a middle eastern dish of meat that originated in Türkiye and is made by slowly cooking marinated meat on a vertical rotisserie then adding shavings to a wrap then adding various vegetables and sauces. “Shawarma King” has one numerous awards over the years including “Best Kebab House in Scotland” from the “British Kebab Awards”, all of which are displayed proudly inside.
“Shawarma King” is, literally, a hole in the wall under an overpass and only does takeaway though has a couple of tables outside on the pavement if you are lucky enough to be able to grab one. Just look for the people lingering around outside on the pavement as they wait for their orders. There is no parking though many will try their luck stopping on the double yellow lines on the road – There is also a NCP car park opposite.
The spotless restaurant is tiny with a cashier at the end of a small corridor along with a fridge containing drinks. Along the right is where the important stuff happens - Food preparation with three HUGE rotisseries of meat slowly turning in front of heated elements ready to be shaved. Behind the cashier I was pleased to see a tandoor oven where they make their own flabread for their wraps. On placing your order you are given a number then you wait outside for your number to be called.
We had a “Chicken Shawarma Wrap” at a reasonable £5.50 (£7.00 for large, if you dare) and a “Lamb Shawarma Wrap” at £6.00 (£7.50 for large). We waited about 10 minutes on Monday lunch hour for our order to be filled which was not too bad and we were also able to grab a table just as a couple were leaving. The wrap was absolutely delicious - The flatbread was a bit thicker than we are used to but full of charred flavour, the chicken was delicious and succulent - full of flavour and not at all dry, the lamb was also full of flavour with a good amount fat (rather than the normal ground lamb this was lamb meat complete with fat trimming which adds a huge amount of flavour and juiciness), while the accompanying sauces and veggies very tasty as well. The sandwich looks deceptively small wrapped in tinfoil but it is absolutely packed with ingredients.
Probably the best Turkish sandwich wrap I have ever had and that is saying something given the number of these I have had over the years…Absolutely delicious and worth seeking out if you are in Glasgow.
