Review of 'Thunderbird (Charing Cross)'
A personal favourite
Having previously tried Thunderbird wings at various food festivals as well as their small location at Big Robot in Canary Wharf we were happy to see a full location open up Villiers Street, beside Charing Cross (the road leading from the Strand down to Embankment Station). Though the interior is small and has a limited number of seats the staff are very friendly and the chicken…very good.
The menu is displayed above the cashiers divided into five simple sections: Wings, Buns (burgers), Pieces, Sides and Drinks. After ordering you food you are given a buzzer to notify you when to return to pick up your meal.
Though most noted for their wings my companion decided to try the “Thunderbun” burger (“fried chicken, awesome sauce, iceberg [lettuce], pickles”; £7) which was incredibly tasty - A huge piece of crispy, juicy chicken with delicious toppings.
For myself, I had the “Meltdown Fries” (“molten jalapeno & miso cheese, charred pepper aoli”; £4.50) which were really tasty and, surprisingly, not very spicy though they did cool down very quickly becoming one solid mass of cheese!
My main course was the “BBQ Wings” (“BBQ, awesome sauce, sesame seeds, spring onion, pickle”; all wings are £5 for 5, £9 for 10, £13 for 15, and £17 for 20) which were exceptional: Huge wings that stayed crispy even with the sauce. The sauce was perfect, again, not spicy with the perfect bit of bitterness from the pickle.
Really good fried chicken with delicious sauces served with a smile. Note that the restaurant does get busy, particularly in this busy location.
