Review of 'My Hero Academia: You're Next'
4th film in the 'My Hero Academia' series
Continuing on the story of “My Hero Academia” with the heroes tracking down escaped villains (season 6 of the TV series) Izuku Midoriya attempts to rescue a young girl, Anna Scervino, but when he touches her, he convulses in pain. A flying yacht appears, carrying the rest of the Gollini villain family, including Valdo, who physically resembles the real All Might, taking inspiration from All Might's battle against “All for One” where All Might points at the camera saying “it's your turn”. Valdo's twisted sense of morality results in him denounced by the real All Might so Valdo is renamed “Dark Might”. Class 1-A find themselves transported into unusual landscapes which turn out to be locations within the flying yacht which grows larger and larger, travelling across the country inevitably towards U.A. High School and the wall protecting the populace from escaped villains. Izuku ends up in a mountain area after his Quirk suddenly stops working…will they be able to defeat Valdo before he destroys U.A. and takes control?
Yes, another big “smash 'em up” chapter in the My Hero Academia saga. It makes you wonder how the Japan in the series is ever able to keep replacing the buildings and landscape that is destroyed in this series. Here we have yet another super-powerful, seemingly invincible villain with inexplicably bad intentions though with the added twist of our not understanding exactly where he gets his power from, and why it keeps getting stronger…though viewers may guess why pretty early on in the film. Another twist is Izuku losing his incredible powers, forcing him to team up with others to defeat the baddies. The action sequences are really quite spectacular but par for the course for this series now - We are used to seeing cities crumble and massive fights going on (and on and on) with shock waves when the characters hit each other inflicting yet more devastation on the landscape…(yawn). It seems more like an extra long episode of the TV series and does not really further the story all that much, but a slightly interesting diversion.
An entertaining, if not exactly deep, chapter in MHA with lots of action for fans of the series. Make no mistake, it is for viewers and not for those unfamiliar who will likely be completely lost.
