Review of 'My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission'

world_heroes_mission.jpg The third film of the “My Hero Academia” franchise sees Humarise, a doomsday cult, believing that “quirks” (the superhero abilities that most people now possess) will eventually cause the extinction of humanity plant bombs around the globe containing a gas that kills quirk users by causing their abilities to rage out of control. Freeing the world of all quirks, leader Flect Turn (voiced by Kazuya Nakai) believes, will allow quirk-free humanity to flourish. After a bomb detonates and causes massive carnage the World Heroes Association dispatches pro heroes from around the world and the students of U. A. High to key locations to disable the bombs before they are set off. They accidentally come across a suitcase that might contain key information about Humarise but only seems to contain…worthless pieces of paper? It is up to Izuku Midoriya (voiced by Daiki Yamashita), Katsuki Bakugo (voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto), Shoto Todoroki (voiced by Yûki Kaji), their fellow U. A. High students and the might of the world's professional heroes to put a stop to Flect's evil plans…

Another fun, big-screen outing for the “My Hero Academia” students who now face a massive challenge in defeating the super intelligent and seemingly indestructible Flect Turn (yes, there is the requisite 30 minute+ “long fight” sequence). It does not really add too much to the bigger story, feeling more like a longer than normal episode of the television series with, let's face it, the end never really in too much doubt. There are disturbing echoes of Arianism here which obviously puts the Humarise cult firmly on the side of evil that must be defeated, dramatically simplifying the story line for audiences. The action, of course, is massive and about what you would expect from the series, seeming to be nothing new.

A somewhat disappointing film in the My Hero Academia series that adds little to the franchise though it is still good fun to watch our heroes in action again in a somewhat larger stage in terms of story scope and battle sequences.

Rating: “Average, but who wants to be average?”
