Review of 'Which Wich Superior Sandwiches'

I stumbled across this rather amusingly named sandwich shop while recently walking in the area with an amazing menu so decided to give it a try. “Which Wich Superior Sandwiches” is a large American chain from Texas with this first branch now in London. The food is, of course, sandwiches though with various sides (including fries/chips) but these sandwiches are not your Boots-variety sandwiches, these are packed with ingredients and full of flavour. We are talking: Cali Chicken Club, Ultimate BLT, Shrimp Po Boy, Beef Mushroom Melt, Garlic Chicken, Big Italian Meatball, Mushroom Avocado Melt, Salt Beef, Loaded BBQ Pork and Ham & Cheese Please. All of these are served in “regular” or “large” (half or full) sized submarine buns except for the salt beef and ham & cheese where they use two slices of toast. This is a classic American sandwich shop of which Subway only provides a glimmer to the world at large.

Menu

On entering the small, basic, glass-walled shop you can pick up a paper sandwich bag with a pre-printed menu on the outside and tick what you want, delivering it to the counter or simply go to the counter and order. Once you order be prepared to wait as each sandwich is “cooked to order”. We had a seat at a small table near the door to wait.

Sandwiches and Fries

The sandwiches arrived each in their own paper bag with the sandwich inside wrapped first in wax paper then tinfoil – They are serious about freshness with this keeping the heat and flavour in. The sandwiches were packed with ingredients and wrapped very tightly so eating was accomplished by pealing off bits of the wrapper and eating you way through. We both had the “large” sized sandwich as we were hungry and though it did not look big it was certainly filling. We had a side of “Sweet Potato Fries” (£2.95) which were ok but a bit soggy as it seems they had been sitting for a bit while our order was prepared.

Shrimp Po' Boy

My sandwich was the “Shrimp Po' Boy” (“Breaded shrimp with Cajun tartar sauce, topped with sliced pickles, tomatoes and lettuce.”; £9.95 for large). I have never seen “Po Boy” in the UK so I simply had to have it and I am very glad I did - The shrimp were large, plump and delicious with the various toppings certainly flavouring but not overwhelming the shrimp (the cajun tartar sauce was particularly worthy of note - nice and tangy with only the faintest hint at heat). The shrimp coating was a bit soggy but I am willing to forgive that for the amazing flavour of everything.

Cali Chicken Club

By companion had the “Cali Chicken Club” (“Roasted chicken breast with candied bacon, fresh avocado, melted Swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce and mayo.”; £9.95 for large) which she found very tasty indeed – and quite filling. The ingredients, as with mine, were very fresh and provided in good quantities.

Forget Subway, go for a REAL sandwich. Sure, it is not exactly cheap (£25.55 for the two of us including two soft drinks and the sweet potato fries) but the quality is there. Absolutely delicious. I am looking forward to going back and working my way through the menu…
