Review of 'Voodoo Ray's'

I have heard about “Voodoo Ray's” but never been fortunate enough to visit - A New York style pizza joint with branches in Dalston, Peckham and Manchester. Being in Dalston for the “Big Flea” we passed by the branch and decided to pay them a visit.

Despite it being a cold day the doors were wide open to the small shop on the Dalston high street. You order your pizza from a counter on the left where they have the various offerings on display. When you pick what you want they either cook it for you or re-heat what you have ordered from the pre-prepared pies. You order either by the (massive) slice (£3.50 or £4.00), 12“ individual pizzas, or a large 22” pie (£21, £23 or £26) with various flavours including many vegetarian options as well as pepperoni and “porky's”. They do have a drinks menu that includes alcohol (beers, spirits, cocktails, and wine) but we passed on this.

I decided on a “Hot Mix” but they did not have any prepared so they took a slice of the pepperoni and “converted” it to a “Hot Mix”, covering it with a bunch of jalapenos and red peppers. After a few chilly minutes waiting at one of their tables at the back while they reheated the slices we were called to counter to pick them up. The crust is absolutely incredible - Crunchy outside but soft inside and not at all “saggy” like many “New York”-style pizzas we have had in the past. The toppings were full of flavour and they did not over-do it on the tomato sauce.

My companion tired a slice of the “Green Velvet” (“Artichoke hearts, green olives, sunblush tomatoes, mozzarella, tomato sauce, green sauce”) which she found very tasty as well.

Service is, as you might expect, polite but not overly friendly though happy to explain the various options. The pizza was some of the best “New York” style pizza I have had in London and I will most definitely be back for more. Prices are great and quality is top notch. Delicious. If it wasn't for the chilly (non heated) and VERY basic interior…Fancy, this is not.
