Review of 'Incognico'

Hidden in the heart of Theatreland you could be forgiven for thinking that Incognico was called “Incognito” instead. The unassuming exterior with floor to ceiling glass windows curtained by chains belies a modern interior with a very good French brassiere-style menu. The best offer is the £25 three course dinner menu which allows you to select the three courses from the standard menu and also includes a glass of champagne (they were more than willing to substitute this for apple juice for me as I do not drink).

I started my early Saturday evening visit with a fantastic penne with wild mushroom sauce - 'Rigatoni' with Tomato Sauce, Buffalo Mozzarella, Olives & Basil - (pasta cooked just right and the sauce quite velvety with fresh wild mushrooms) followed by the lamb (the highlight of the dinner – fantastically tender and VERY tasty) with “mille-feuille” potatoes (the disappointment of the dinner, really, with not a lot of flavour). I followed my dinner with the warm chocolate mousse (on the recommendation of my waitress) which was so incredibly rich I was grateful there was only a small amount in the bottom of a shallow bowl. The other options for pudding did not have the same amount of “yummy” factor to me.

I found the staff quite efficient taking from me my coat and two bags when I first arrived and they saw me heading towards my table. I did think they were a bit too pervasive throughout the meal as they seemed to hover in the corner at all times on the lookout for something to do for each table.

The prices were quite reasonable though the “specials” of the day were by far the most expensive things on offer (though they did look quite tasty).

A surprisingly good meal for the area at a good price. Don't let the cool, elite looking exterior put you off…
