Review of 'Roadhouse (NOW CLOSED)'
We have walked by this place so many times and did not even realise it was a night club/restaurant! Located under the southern market at Covent Garden this is not entirely surprising…The entrance off of the southern terrace takes you under the market into a surprisingly spacious interior with bright lights and retro furnishings. “Retro” as in American retro - Chicken wings, burgers and ribs on offer.
We visited before the night crowd arrives for this popular bar and night spot. We were shown to a small booth on the side of the room with a great view of the ever-changing electronic sign behind the small dance floor and stage. Even thought it was still early it was a bit noisy as our waitress left the menus.
Well, being here we went whole-hog and had a double-portion of the buffalo wings starter (£7.65) which were quite saucy but tasty - Slightly dry but a good amount of meat. I had the BBQ “Big Rack” of ribs (£14.55) which included quite a small portion of coleslaw and bigger portion of chips. The chips were disappointing - Obviously frozen and quite grainy. The ribs were very good - extremely meaty with a tasty sauce. I was pretty much able to peal the meat off with a fork and only resorting to fingers to pick up a few scraps left on the bones. The portion size was quite large as well. My companion had a disappointing hamburger (with mature cheddar; £9.45 + £0.95 for the cheese) - Not a lot of flavour, hardly meaty at all.
The service was reasonable if not enthusiastic though it is difficult to hold a conversation with the background noise…
A bit more expensive than I would have liked but reasonable for the city. Quite good if not really something to write home about. If you want a quick fix of American and want a bit of ambiance you probably could not go wrong here…But if you want a true burger in the south market go upstairs to MeatMarket…
