Review of 'Kathmandu Inn'

A small little restaurant hidden away on a busy roundabout just around the corner from where I live in Shepherd's Bush the Kathmandu Inn has always caught my eye as I pass by serving, as it does, Nepalese food. A bit unusual that so I have wanted to give it a try.

A “classical” British Indian restaurant the small interior has pictures from the country on the walls, linen, and fully set tables throughout. While we ate on a Friday night traffic was regularly coming in to order take-away and there were orders being delivered all the time. Though it was quiet when we first arrived at about 7 pm, by the time we left nearer to 9 it was a full house. Quite impressive for a small local restaurant.

The menu is typical of any Indian restaurant, really, the exception being the “Nepal” section of the menu so we picked largely from this section though we had to start with the obligatory popadoms (very fresh and served with mango chutney, onions and yoghurt dips; £3.40 for 4). We had the “Chicken Nepal” (£8.20) which was chicken in a creamy sauce with mangos - Very nice with the chicken being very flavourful though we found, as we ate, a slight bit over-sweet. The “Vegetable Tandori Masala” (£6.50) was a surprise hit with wonderful mixed (not overcooked) vegetables in a creamy flavourful sauce. The “Lamb Bhutuwa” (£8.60) - basically lamb pieces with some spices and no sauce - was a bit bland though you could definitely taste the lamb!

Service was good.

We will definitely be back to try some more on the menu as this is a step above a normal Indian takeaway. I can't say it was the best Indian-style food I have had but not bad at all for a “local2. Disappointing that not more of the menu is from Nepal…
