Review of 'Gondola Pizza'
Gondola Pizza is something of a Winnipeg institution having been around since 1964 with various locations now in Winnipeg and elsewhere including Ontario. The location on Pembina Highway is one of the favourites of a friend of mine so we agreed to meet up there for lunch.
The interior does not look like it has been touched for many years but it was extremely clean (including the carpet) though the furnishings did show some age and cracking. The staff were friendly, allowing us to sit and wait, helping ourselves to tinned soft drinks from the cooler in the middle of the room.
The menu is a confusion of options but delicious looking thin-crust pizza (there is only the one style here) divided roughly into “Create Your Own”, “Specialty and Premium Pizzas”, “Daily Pizza Specials”, “Salads, Wings, Sides and Beverages”, “Daily Dinner Specials”, “Desserts” and “Gluten-Free Menu”. From the “Specialty and Premium Pizzas” section we opted for “The Supreme Boss”, for simplicity, which was likely a mistake as it was one of the most expensive pizzas at $34.99 but is described as “The biggest taste bud bustin’ pizza in the west! 15? of pastrami, ham, salami, pepperoni, extra lean ground beef, green peppers, mushrooms, shrimp, smoked side bacon, original handcrafted tomato sauce and 100% mozzarella cheese. 10 Toppings (x-large, 15? only)”. The other “Specialty and Premium Pizzas” were slightly cheaper ranging in price from $17.99 (9“) to $29.99 (15”) and $18.99 (9“) to $30.99 (15”) for one, $25.99 (9“) to $47.99 (15”) and $26.99 (9“) to $50.99 (15”) for two. “Create Your Own” has single topping pizzas (cheese) at $11.99 (9“) to 19.99 (15”) for one, and $18.79 (9“) to $35.99 (15”) for two plus extra for additional toppings. I can't say it is the cheapest.
After ordering we did not have to wait long for it to be delivered to the table. A rather large plinth was placed on the table on which our pizza was placed. It was quite tasty and well prepared though I can't say it had a HUGE amount of toppings on it. It was a bit heavy on the salty and meat side but tasty with very nice sauce that did not overwhelm the other flavours. For the two of us it was fine and it left us reasonably full.
Old school Winnipeg pizza haunt that still serves decent tasting pizza but be careful ordering as it can get expensive…
