Review of 'Twisters '

twisters.jpg We follow Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a former storm chaser and meteorologist, who is drawn back to Oklahoma’s tornado-prone plains to test cutting-edge weather-tracking technology with a team working for Storm Par. Kate moved away from her research into stopping tornados following a tragedy five years earlier where three of her team are killed in a violent storm. Haunted by the tragedy, Kate soon realizes the company she works for is not as altruistic as she thought so reluctantly joins forces with social media-savvy storm enthusiast Tyler Owens (Glen Powell) as multiple storm systems converge in central Oklahoma. She soon realizes that Tyler is not what he seems on the surface and has a genuine desire to understand tornados and help those who suffer from it's ravages. As the storm season intensifies, rival teams race to intercept and analyze unprecedented tornado phenomena, placing themselves in the path of increasingly violent weather. Will Kate be able to use her research to help put a stop to the carnage…will her new team even survive the experience?

This is not so much a sequel to the 1996 “Twister” film as a new story entirely with the science and effects significantly updated for the modern age (there was not much imagination given to the actual name of the sequel, it has to be said). There are some fairly one-dimensional aspects of the plot and characters but the real star, as always, are the spectacular action sequences which are quite amazing. This is more than just the flying cows of the first film with the action significantly ramped up yet seeming to be far more realistic. Admittedly, the geek in me found the science quite interesting even if some of it is a bit “out there” in terms of plausibility (the storm chaser side of things appears to be quite realistic).

An entertaining action film that is a bit light on character development but has some great action sequences that certainly eclipses the 1994 “Twister” film.
