Review of 'Microserfs'

Microserfs by Douglas Coupland

A quirky novel following a group of Microsoft “geeks” as they take a chance leaving the security of the Microsoft campus in Seattle to work on a project on their own based in California's Silicon Valley. The story is told from one of the geek's standpoint, Dan, as he interjects with thoughts on life and relationships as well as modern society. The book is interspersed with many amusing anecdotes while the story proceeds in fits and starts throughout following the foibles and quirks of the main characters. Despite it's subject matter those unfamiliar should be able to relate to this novel without too much difficulty (though those with a bit of understanding will find many of the techie references very amusing). The writing is VERY eclectic and has occasional “computer subconscious file” inserts which are just quotes and words from every-day life in no particular pattern – saying a lot about our society in the process. Certainly not a boring novel it is a bit difficult to read but definitely worth-while.
