[Market Place]

Ashbourne is a small market town south of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. “Henmore Brook” passes just to the south of the town centre and the large “Asbourne Park” is to the east.

[St John Street]

There are several streets and small back alleys that can be explored containing a number of shops and places to eat.

[The Rye River in Bakewell]

Bakewell is a small town in the middle of the Peak District. There are two markets held in the town centre every Monday.

[One of the Markets]

One of the joys of the town is just wandering around and getting “lost” in the small alleys and shops. There are lots of these here and it is a huge draw for tourists (caveat emptor).

[Buxton Crescent]

Located on the river Wye in Derbyshire, Buxton is a Victorian spa town with spectacular architecture and a rich past. The small high street has typical shops and an unremarkable shopping centre (The Springs Shopping Centre) but it is the lavish gardens and architecture from the old spa that are the main attraction.

[The Leaning Spire]

Well known for the leaning spire church (caused by the weight of the roofing material), Chesterfield is a cosmopolitan town with a lot of shopping and restaurants. The fact that the core area is on top of a hill makes wandering around the pedestrianized streets a bit problematic (though there are some car parks at the top of the hill).

[Great Britain - Derbyshire]

Derbyshire is the home of the wonderful Peak District National Park. There are many small towns and wonderful hiking/biking trails.

Peak District

The Peak District National Park is a large area of public land with some wonderful, if spartan, landscape. Though perhaps not as famous as their Yorkshire cousins, the Derbyshire Dales are breath-taking to behold offering wonderful vistas of the rolling hills and farms…

Peak District Journal

May Bank Holiday Weekend 2001

On the “May Bank Holiday” weekend (May 5th to May 7th) I travelled up to the north from my home in the south to visit the Peak District. Actually, I was visiting Sheffield as that is where the World Snooker Championships are held every year (I am a big fan of professional snooker). I decided to use the excuse of the snooker to actually visit some of the area that I had in the past only travelled through.

Matlock is a small town to the south-east of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. The town is unremarkable in that it has a busy road running through it and not a lot of shops or things to see. It is more a starting point to explore the beautiful countryside that surrounds.
