[ Arbeit macht frei ("Work sets you free")]

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum is a World War II German Nazi concentration and extermination camp. This is the site of one of the worst human atrocities to have ever occurred with more than a million people documented to have been put to death with the likelihood that many more lost their lives here. There are two camps that can be visited today: The original Auschwitz camp, where the museum is loca…

Introduction

I have only ever visited Warsaw and Krakow but I have found the people to be quite warm and welcoming. This is obviously a country very much in the middle of discovering itself after the trauma of recent centuries but it seems to be an outlook of optimism

Krakow is the second-largest city in Poland after Warsaw and served largely intact in the second world war including parts of the Jewish ghetto the German's created there in Kazimierz. It lies on the Vistula River just north of border with Slovakia.

[Michalowice Chamber]

The Wieliczka Salt Mine (Kopalnia Soli “Wieliczka”) was used for salt mining for 700 years but has been open to tourist for about 200. Early salt harvesters boiled the water seeping up from the ground which moved onto digging shafts to extract the salt directly from the rock. Over the years the mine expanded to 9 levels, 245 kilometres of tunnels and is 327m at the deepest point.

Warsaw is an interesting place. Spread out over quite some distance along the Vistula River the middle of the city is alive with restaurants but with older parts (though none much older than the second world war due to the havoc wrecked by the Germans) and a young population that is determined to look forward rather than dwell in the past.
