Review of 'Sardi's'

On my original visit to New York in 2001 I paid a visit to this iconic Broadway restaurant that has served continental cuisine to the stars of the stage since 1958. Less than a block from Times Square, Sardi's is well known for the hundreds of caricatures of their famous patrons adorning the walls, often found near to where the stars like to sit (but otherwise the portraits are moved around regularly). But it is not only this quirky interior that attracts it is also the…

Review of 'Russian Tea Room'

A classic New York restaurant with a long history recently under new management they still serve up some of the best meals around. A bit expensive with reservations being a definite must the location is right opposite the south side of central park (around the corner from Trump Plaza). Having sampled their menu, I do not believe their best food is their Russian food

Review of 'Carnegie Delicatessen and Restaurant (NOW CLOSED)'

The quintessential New York Deli complete with rude waitresses and truly phenomenal sandwiches -- an absolute must (watch for the free bowl of pickles!). I dare you to eat a whole Woody Allen sandwich! I found that particularly good with fantastic pastrami in a mile-high sandwich (inspiring awed looks from the numerous tourists). The walls are covered with signed pictures of famous people who have eaten here and the menu is fill…

In 2001, shortly before 9/11 I visited Virgil's “Read BBQ” restaurant, just a short distance away from Times Square. I was very happy with the food and surprised at how good a BBQ it really was. When we returned this year we just happened to be in the area so gave it another try. It was worth returning though the portions are quite big

A tranquil oasis in the middle of the city serving great (if a bit expensive) sushi. Be sure to enjoy the quite patio (outside yet!) at the back or enjoy the modern, but rather crowded, interior.

Review of 'Katz's Delicatessen'

I think it is fair to say that “Katz's Deli” is an institution. For more than a century it has been providing New Yorkers with some of the best deli sandwiches in the world and it shows no sign of slowing down. A part of American culture like baseball, Katz's appears in modern cultural references (including the notorious scene from

With our hotel located a few blocks north of Times Square we were looking for somewhere to have breakfast. Our first morning we visited “Applebees” which was OK but we were certainly not impressed so swore to try something better. Walking down towards Times Square it was not easy to miss the fact that Junior's large interior was absolutely packed so we gave it a try. Junior's is a bit of a NYC institution well known for it's cheesecake (which is heavenly, more about …

Review of 'Ellen's Stardust Diner'

This diner sort of sets you aback if you are not sure what to expect. The flashy neon lights becon you in but you might not expect the servers to break out in song every few minutes (technically, about 12 songs are sung an hour), often show tunes. Often they will continue serving while they are singing or jump up onto a walkway between seating areas on the ground floor. Most of the servers are Broadway actors that are between theatre appearances or are j…

Review of 'Carlo's Bakery Times Square'

For a while we were great fans of the “Cake Boss” on television (TLC) showing the amazing creations of Buddy Valastro and his talented staff -- Amazing cakes that appeared to be limited only by their imagination and seemed to taste just as good as they looked. Eventually we stopped watching as the show seemed to repeat itself and lost it's appeal with the increasingly soap-opera antics of the family. That is not to say we stopped admiring the obvious…
