Great location. Disappointing and overpriced food. Brusk service. In a nutshell.

We were staying on the other side of the canal so decided to give ROMA a try. It is located on the north-east side of the

We were a bit hesitant about visiting Rivetta as despite it having a great recommendation in our travel guide (the Eyewitness Travel guide to “Venice & the Veneto”) the reviews on Google were, shall we say, quite mixed with various people saying that it was the worst and others saying it was the best. So, with some trepidation we decided to give it a shot anyway.

This is the first Harry's Bar and, famously, the haunt of Ernest Hemmingway. It attracts a lot of tourists but if you can find a table and have some time it is worth settling in for while.

Located just down from St Mark's square, Harry's Bar is right on the grand canal but you could be forgiven for missing it with only a few small windows with

Venice is a wonderful city full of small eateries hidden down a myriad of alleyways. Avoiding the obvious tourist restaurants with their cover charges (“coperto”) and going for the smaller “holes in the wall” is the way to go. Venetian food is generally seafood-based but make sure to eat whatever is in season and make a bee-line for anywhere serving fresh fish.
