Review of 'St. John Bread and Wine'

A fantastic “lighter” version of the main St. John Restaurant that does not skimp on the quality that has made the name a by-word for exceptional British “nose-to-tail” eating in London. Offering a simpler but no less interesting menu Bread and Wine offers all of the first class quality and service of St. John. I enjoyed the more relaxed dining room experience that it entered directly off the street (across from Spitalfields market) though the interior w…

Review of 'Pham Sushi'

Looking for somewhere to eat close to our offices near the Barbican the other night for a business discussion we ended up in Pham Sushi on the edge of the estate very close to Moorgate tube station. The ground floor restaurant has floor to ceiling glass windows looking into the cool, modern, brightly lit interior. At the small reception desk we were offered a bag for our wet umbrellas then shown into the main restaurant area then seated near the counter where the sus…

Review of 'Island Poke'

I have never tried “poke”, the Hawaiian marinated cubed raw fish dish served in a bowl on top of a base of rice or slaw that can be topped with any number of things. When Time Out came up with a good deal for any poke bowl and a drink at Island Poke I figured it was a good time to give it a try. I do love sushi and this seems like a bit of a fusion take on sashimi.

A personal favourite

A friend of mine had told me that if I was ever in the Liverpool Street area and looking for somewhere to have lunch I HAD to try “Three Uncles”. He told me they do an amazing meat+rice bowl. Never one to ignore a restaurant recommendation I took him up on this when I was recently in the area joining the queue outside the restaurant on Devonshire Row opposite and just south of the main entrance to Liverpool Street station. Yes, a queue, Three U…

Review of 'chaiiwala Brick Lane'

We were in London to experience a bit of Christmas and stayed on Brick Lane as it is always an interesting place to be. The hotel was offering the same-old same-old for breakfast so we headed out to see what our options were and, frankly, I did not hold out much hope as I always feel this is more of a lunch/dinner/snack type area but I was pleasantly surprised to find (literally) opposite the hotel a small, modern café
