Review of 'The Chicago Rib Shack (NOW CLOSED)'

An interesting bit of Americana in Knightsbridge. Entering the two-level restaurant (bar upstairs, restaurant down) the walls are lined with small painted pigs (you can buy a blank one to paint, if you like, and there are several signed by famous people in the display cases in the basement) and you are taken into the sub-basement that is decorated fairly simply but in a very American fashion (no table cloths and simple service). We had the trade-mark Baby Back Ribs that come with a small cob of corn and (surprisingly tasteless) cole-slaw. The ribs were very flavourful, tender and meaty. Before you begin, you are offered rather tacky (but, again, typical for this style) plastic bibs to wear – all part of the experience. For desert we tried both the cheesecake of the day (fantastic) and the Mississippi Mud Pie (very sweet – too sweet for me – and very chocolatey).

The service was generally amiable if not out of this world throughout the meal. The prices are quite expensive for a meal of this type (£50 for two of us without alcohol) but if you pre-book on-line for a meal early in the week they have a half-price offer on a number of their dishes (which I would strongly recommend unless price is not an object).

When we are in the mood for a bit of American comfort food I think we will be back…
