Review of 'Kam Fung Chinese Restaurant'

It is interesting to find such a throw-back to the older-style of Chinese restaurant in the heart of London. I am not making any apologies to it, indeed, the food tastes quite good and with the massive portions the prices do not seem as expensive as would first glance suggest.

We visited at lunch time which is, I imagine, when most people visit. Kam Fung is tucked away down a side street off of High Holbourn but is easy to spot with it's basic interior buzzing with the lunch-time crowd. We were seated near the kitchen in the back and given the lunch menu to browse. We both ended up ordering the Kung Po Chicken (something like £8) though the lunch menu was full of a number of interesting looking items all in the £5-£8 range (aimed at the lunch time crowd they are all “one plate” dishes so you do not need to order anything else) and most of it fried in one way or another…While waiting for our food to arrive we were given prawn crackers (which I would normally associate with Malaysian cooking, but, heck, roll with it) that were very tasty and soon disappeared. The mains arrived in short order and were quite tasty - Deep fried chicken pieces in a red sweet-sour sauce served with peanuts on top of either rice or noodles. Old-time Chinese take-away cooking indeed.

It was refreshing to see a number of Chinese actually eating here in addition to the good number of local businessmen. It is certainly very popular.

Service was quick and while not overly friendly was not offensive (though I have heard this might have been the case a few years ago) - Indeed, on leaving they opened the door for us…

Tasty food, old-time Chinese food and good prices. Do not expect authentic or even healthy…
