Review of 'Wing Wing'

We have had a bit of thing with chicken wings this year (see National Wing Day 2018, for example) so when I learned about the Korean wing emporium “Wing Wing” opening up in nearby Hammersmith it is something that I immediately added to my list of places to visit. Having now visited I am certainly grateful I did as this chicken is delicious and delivered up in a pleasant, relaxed, style.

Located across the street and around the corner from the Broadway Shopping Centre in Hammersmith (where you get off of the tube) on the road up to Shephered's Bush, the small entrance to Wing Wing should not put you off. There is a counter on the ground that serves wonderful deep-fried “bau” desserts and drinks with only a few stool seats in the window but for the food (and bar) walk down the stairs. The basement has a large seating area, a full service food ordering counter, a bar and a private lounge area that you can hire.

Downstairs Till

When we visited on a Saturday at about lunch time it was not very busy but as we left we noticed a queue at the counter. We decided to stick to their speciality opting for the “combo” deal that consisted of three wings, three drumsticks and fries for £9 (we added fountain soft drinks for another £1.40). This seems to be a good deal but they offer a number of choices for how you might want your friend chicken wings and drumsticks as well as a number of other deep-fried options including baos, (chicken) katsu, burgers, wraps, fish, haloumi, tofu, calamari, seafood, prawns and even salad options. So you can pop in for a quick snack, lunch or even dinner. The staff are more than happy to talk about the menu and were very friendly. Perhaps a bit on the pricy side though.

Kitchen

Though it operates like a fast food joint everything is cooked to order so it took a few minutes for ours to be ready. We were given a buzzer to take to our table that went off when our order was ready to collect from the kitchen window opposite. The seating area probably has seating for about 50 people with 15 or 16 tables as well as screens showing K-Pop videos (though the music playing in the restaurant did not appear to be from any of the videos playing on any of the screens). The tables are what you might expect in a fast-food restaurant - plastic and utilitarian though, unlike other fast food restaurants, the place was spotless - the floor, tables and seats.

Seating

Our chicken was absolutely amazing - Extremely juicy (though cooked!) with an amazing crunchy exterior. The toppings are brushed on so they do not cause the crunchy coating to become soggy. We tried all three flavours on offer: Soy Garlic, Hot and Liquorice. The soy garlic was pleasant and slightly sweet, the hot was not overly hot but had a slight kick (my companion, not a fan of spicy food, had no problems with them) but the liquorice, bizarrely, was the star of the show - Deliciously sticky with only a hint of the anise-y liquorice flavour.

Dinner

For sides, I had the “seaweed fries” which were OK but not very flavoursome. Best to stick to just the plain fries and help yourself to the assortment of toppings in the seating area. The skinny fries were deliciously crunchy, not overcooked and VERY fresh. Delicious.

If you are looking for a fried chicken hit a cut above in quality and are willing to pay for it (£20.80 for the two of us including softs), give Wing Wing a try. Better than most options in Hammersmith…
