Review of 'Meat Market'

This small restaurant hidden away in the deep recesses of Jubilee Market Hall (the small craft/antique market to the south of the main Covent Garden, beside the Transport Museum) on the first floor, Meat Market has been raved about in the press…For good reason.

It ain't fancy. Located in the same place as a bunch of low-rise food outlets this is worth searching out even if the queues go out of the door - Don't give up as I am told this goes very quickly. We were lucky enough to visit on a bank holiday when it was very quiet. The menu is extremely short and is basically hamburgers and hot dogs. The hamburgers are their signature dish so this is what we sampled: I had the “Dead Hippy” which was described as “2 beef patties, lettuce, cheese, pickles, minced white onion and dead hippy sauce” (£7.50) - Amazing. It doesn't look that big when it arrives wrapped up but don't be deceived as it is mostly wonderfully flavourful beef patties with the condiments simply emphasising the flavours. Juicy and finger-licking good. I had a side of fries (NOT chips, £3) which were fantastically crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside - Thankfully they are not afraid here of seasoning with lashings of salt applied here (very tasty). My companion had a “Double Bubble”, “2 beef patties, cheese, pickles, minced white onions, ketchup, and mustard” (£7.50) which she enjoyed immensely. Soft drinks are £2.50 and bottomless…

The “decor” is quite basic with simple wood tables and stools along the long-narrow restaurant overlooking the market below (not sure what it looks like towards closing time - 11 pm…not sure I want to be in that area at that time either!). The staff are helpful and friendly. Food arrived quickly and with a smile.

If you are looking for something reasonably cheap and tasty (and grease!), look no further. Worth going out of your way for…
