Review of 'Melissa's Missteak'

Well known in Banff for providing the best steak in town. We visited on a Wednesday evening and the place was surprisingly empty. It is an interesting eating area with a large vaulted wood ceiling with a number of cozy wooden tables.

Having heard from others we stuck to simply having the Alberta AAA fully-aged Prime Rib steak ($26.25 for 8 oz, $34.25 for 12 oz). I went for the 12 oz but it turned out to be a bit too much for me but done perfectly when I requested “medium rare”. It was melt-in-the-mouth tasty. Probably one of the best steaks I have ever had and certainly the best Prime Rib I can recall ever having.

The steaks are all served with (deep breath) vegetable of the day, loaf of bread with garlic butter and your choice of garden or Caesar salad and either baked potato, french fries, mashed potatoes or rice. We were supposed to be offered sauce for the steaks but this did not happen. We all stuck with having baked potatoes with our meal which was served “with all the fixings” and very good indeed and not too large. I also went for the Caesar salad which was adequate but not that memorable. The bread was also adequate but not amazing.

I think it is this last sentiment that pretty much summarizes my experience - Excellent steaks (truly) but everything else simply OK. Even the service was merely adequate.

We had no room for desert but those looked moderately interesting “borrowing” from various countries sticky toffee pudding, New York style cheesecake, apple pie…).

Great steaks…average everything else. With the great big caveat that I did not try anything else…
